Housed in a remarkable 1930s bus garage on Boyle Street in Cheetham, the Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester is a treasure trove for anyone with an interest in the region's rich transport heritage. The museum is operated by the Greater Manchester Transport Society (GMTS) in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester, and has been welcoming visitors since 1979. It holds accredited museum status and is a genuine labour of love, kept running largely by dedicated volunteers.

The collection spans over a century of public road transport history, from an 1890s horse bus through to a full-size prototype Metrolink tram, taking in the many buses and coaches that served the towns and cities of Greater Manchester along the way. Fourteen former bus operators are represented in the collection, and alongside the vehicles, visitors can explore archives of photographs, posters and objects that bring the region's transport past vividly to life. On selected days throughout the year, free heritage bus rides are available, giving visitors the unique experience of travelling on a lovingly restored historic vehicle.

The museum also hosts a programme of themed events and special exhibition days throughout the year, as well as a period tea room and shop on site. Under 16s enter free when accompanied by an adult, and school visits are available free of charge by prior arrangement. Whether you're a lifelong transport enthusiast or simply looking for a distinctive and memorable day out, the Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester delivers something genuinely out of the ordinary.
