Healey Dell Nature Reserve in Rochdale
Healey Dell Nature Reserve is one of Greater Manchester's most rewarding natural escapes and a brilliant choice for families, walkers and history lovers alike. Tucked away just 2 miles from Rochdale town centre, it combines stunning natural scenery with fascinating industrial heritage, all in one beautifully preserved green space.
Woodland walks and waterfalls
At the heart of the reserve, the River Spodden has carved its way through ancient woodland over thousands of years, creating a dramatic landscape of gorges, cascading waterfalls and rich natural beauty. The scenery is especially impressive after rainfall, when the falls are at their most spectacular. Walking routes follow the river through the trees, making it a lovely choice for a peaceful stroll whatever the season.
The Victorian viaduct
One of Healey Dell's most striking features is its magnificent railway viaduct, standing 100 feet high above the valley floor. Built in the 1800s as part of a now-disused railway line, it has been transformed into a nature trail offering sweeping views across the surrounding landscape. It's a highlight of any visit and a genuinely impressive piece of local heritage to explore on foot.
Healey Dell Heritage Centre
The Heritage Centre brings the story of the Dell to life with a permanent pictorial exhibition tracing the history of the area, from its days powering ancient corn, wool and cotton mills to its life as a much-loved nature reserve. It's well worth a look before or after your walk, and entry is free.
Victorian tea rooms
After a walk through the woodland, the Heritage Centre's Victorian-themed tea rooms make a lovely place to stop and recharge. English cream teas are served in vintage bone-china, giving the whole experience a charming, old-fashioned feel.
Fairy Grotto
Younger visitors are in for a treat at the Fairy Grotto, where children can meet the Healey Dell Fairy Godmother. It adds a touch of magic to the day and makes the reserve a particularly memorable outing for families with little ones.
