Originally opened in 1984, Manchester Jewish Museum is housed in a stunning Grade II listed 1874 Spanish and Portuguese synagogue — the first Sephardi synagogue in Manchester — designed by Jewish architect Edward Solomons. Following a major redevelopment in 2019, the museum now combines the beautifully restored synagogue, which forms part of the permanent exhibition, with a modern gallery, learning studio and kitchen, vegetarian café and gift shop. It sits in the heart of Cheetham Hill, one of the most culturally diverse areas in the city, around 15 minutes' walk from Manchester Victoria station.
The museum's permanent galleries explore the stories of Jewish Manchester across centuries, with a rich programme of temporary exhibitions, talks, performances and community events running throughout the year. Timed entry tickets are available to book online up to four weeks in advance and double as an annual pass, meaning visitors can return free of charge within 12 months of their first visit. Families are well catered for, with free activity rucksacks available at the welcome desk, packed with scavenger hunts, games and creative activities for children aged 4 to 10.
The on-site café serves a contemporary vegetarian kosher-style menu using local produce, open daily from 10am to 4pm with hot food available from 11.30am to 2.30pm. The museum also has a learning kitchen available for hire, used by school groups, community groups and local businesses for cooking and baking sessions. The building is fully accessible with a lift to the first floor, and the museum runs a busy programme of community groups and events welcoming people from all backgrounds.
