Opened in 2000 on the waterfront at Salford Quays, The Lowry has grown into one of the most visited arts destinations in the North of England, welcoming over 18.5 million visitors since its doors first opened. Designed by architect Michael Wilford, the striking stainless steel and glass building is as much a landmark as it is a cultural hub, sitting alongside the Manchester Ship Canal with views across MediaCityUK and the regenerated Quays.
At its heart, The Lowry is a world-class performing arts venue. The Lyric Theatre — which holds the largest stage in England outside London's West End — stages major touring productions spanning West End musicals, drama, opera, dance and comedy, drawing some of the biggest names in entertainment. The more intimate Quays Theatre provides a home for bold, adventurous productions and visiting companies, while a busy programme of workshops, talks and family events runs throughout the year across the building.
Alongside its theatres, The Lowry houses the internationally significant LS Lowry Collection in its Andrew Law Galleries — the world's largest public collection of works by L.S. Lowry, comprising over 400 paintings, pastels and drawings. Entry to the galleries is free, and the collection is always on display alongside regularly changing exhibitions. After your visit, the Lowry Bar & Kitchen serves food and drinks throughout the day with stunning views across the Quays. The Lowry is fully accessible, with step-free access, lifts to all floors, accessible toilets, and a range of assisted performances and sensory-friendly provisions.
LOWRY 360 | Free Immersive Experience
Not to be missed on any visit to The Lowry is LOWRY 360, the UK's first free permanent immersive experience, launched as part of The Lowry's 25th anniversary celebrations in 2025. Created in collaboration with Barcelona-based digital studio Layers of Reality, the experience places visitors at the centre of L.S. Lowry's iconic painting Going to the Match, surrounding them with super-high-resolution imagery and layered sound — from the distant clang of factory whistles to the building roar of a match day crowd streaming through the streets of Salford.
One free timed entry ticket gives access to both LOWRY 360 and the LS Lowry Collection in the Andrew Law Galleries, so visitors can move seamlessly from the immersive experience directly to the original painting. Booking a timed slot in advance is required and can be done via The Lowry's website. For group and school bookings, contact the gallery team on 0161 876 2003.
