Heaton Park in Manchester
Heaton Park is one of Manchester's best-loved green spaces and a great choice for families wanting fresh air, room to run around and lots to do in one place. Whether you're planning a proper day out or just a quick visit for a play and a walk, there is plenty here to keep all ages busy.
Playgrounds
Heaton Park has two specially designed children's play areas. One is near Heaton Hall and the Farm Centre in the north of the park, while the other is the Lakeside Adventure Playground by the boating lake. Both are free to use and open during park hours, making them a great starting point for families visiting with younger children.
Animal Centre
The free Animal Centre, set in the old stables, is always popular with children. You can see farmyard favourites including chickens, goats, pigs, ducks, rabbits and geese, along with alpacas and even a Sulcata tortoise. Around the wider park you may also spot cattle, horses, donkeys and peacocks.
Boating Lake
The boating lake adds an extra bit of fun to a visit, with seasonal hire available from February to November. Families can choose from rowing boats, pedalos, electric boats and swan-themed boats, which is a lovely way to see the park from a different angle.
Walks and outdoor space
Heaton Park is ideal for walking, scooting, running and letting off steam. There are routes for different abilities, including family-friendly options and paths that may suit pushchairs. The park also hosts a free weekly parkrun on Saturday mornings.
Historic features
As well as the outdoor space, Heaton Park is packed with character. Highlights include Heaton Hall, the Orangery, ornamental areas, the Papal Monument and other historic landmarks dotted around the site, so there is plenty to discover as you explore.
Other things to do
If you want to make more of a day of it, there is also golf, tram rides and the tramway museum, seasonal events, gardens and lots of space for a picnic. There are cafes at the Stables and the Lakeside too, handy for drinks, snacks or lunch during your visit.
