Founded in 1981 and funded by Greater Manchester Police, the GMP Museum collects and preserves archive material and objects relating to the history of policing across the Greater Manchester region. The collection spans historic police vehicles, uniforms, equipment, photographs and official records, as well as personal documents and memorabilia that bring the human stories of local policing to life. The museum is an accredited institution and serves as an important resource for both community engagement and historical research.

The museum is open to the public every Tuesday, free of charge, with no need to book in advance. Visitors are welcome to browse the collections and speak with knowledgeable staff and volunteers about the history of policing in the region. Private guided tours lasting one and a half to two hours are also available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for groups of between 10 and 30 people, and are free of charge — though all donations are gratefully received. Groups regularly making use of this offer include schools, colleges, universities, ESOL groups and local interest groups.

The museum also holds a substantial archive of primary and secondary source material relating to the history and development of Greater Manchester policing. Archive access is by appointment only and enquiries should be made by emailing the museum directly. The museum additionally offers educational workshops for KS2 and SEN groups, outreach sessions and a range of downloadable digital learning resources.
