Fletcher Moss Park and Parsonage Gardens in Didsbury

Fletcher Moss Park and Parsonage Gardens are two of South Manchester's most cherished green spaces, sitting side by side in the heart of Didsbury. Together they cover 92 acres of gardens, meadow, woodland and riverside paths, and have been lovingly maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers since the Friends group was formed in 2006.

The gardens

The Parsonage Gardens are tranquil and beautifully planted, offering a sense of calm that feels a world away from the city. They have held an RHS 'It's Your Neighbourhood' Gold Award every year from 2011 to 2023, which speaks to the extraordinary care and skill that goes into keeping them at their best. The gardens are a favourite with plant lovers and photographers alike, and are particularly stunning in spring and summer when the planting is at its most colourful.

The Rockery

One of the most distinctive features of Fletcher Moss Park is its historic rockery, originally started by Robert Williamson using alpine plants he and his wife Emily collected on trips through the mountains of Europe. Emily Williamson was a co-founder of the RSPB, and the family home, The Croft, sat within the park for 30 years. Today the rockery is home to many interesting and rare plants and trees, making it a fascinating spot for anyone with an interest in horticulture and natural history.

Meadow, woodland and the River Mersey

Beyond the formal gardens, the park opens out into wilder, more natural spaces. A wildflower meadow, areas of woodland and shale paths leading down to the River Mersey give the site real variety, and there is plenty to discover on foot whichever route you take. The park is excellent for wildlife spotting too, with a wide range of birds, butterflies and insects recorded across both sites.

The Parsonage building

The historic Old Parsonage building sits at the heart of the Parsonage Gardens and serves as an art gallery, wellbeing activity centre and wedding venue, run by the Didsbury Parsonage Trust. Coffee is available to purchase there, and it's a lovely spot to pause during your visit. Toilets are available at the Parsonage between 9.30am and 4pm.

Café and refreshments

Fletcher Moss Park has a popular outdoor café where you can pick up hot drinks, snacks and light refreshments. It's a great place to sit and take in the surroundings, and particularly welcome on a chilly day after a walk along the river.
