Tucked into a handsome Victorian building on Thomas Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter, esea contemporary is a pioneering cultural institution with a unique focus: it is the only non-profit gallery in the UK dedicated to presenting and platforming artists whose practices are informed by East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) heritages. Founded over 40 years ago and supported by Arts Council England and Greater Manchester Combined Authority, it has become an essential and distinctive voice in the city's arts scene.

The gallery presents a rolling programme of free exhibitions, events, artist residencies and community projects throughout the year. Current and recent highlights include Thresholds of Becoming, a group exhibition marking the gallery's 40th anniversary, bringing together six artists whose practices explore ideas of transition and fragile ecologies of the in-between. The wider programme spans guided tours, hands-on art workshops, talks and the popular esea ArtClub sessions, offering something for visitors of all backgrounds and interests.

esea contemporary is fully accessible, with wheelchair and buggy access across both floors via a lift, an accessible toilet with baby changing facilities, and a portable induction loop available on request. Guide, hearing and assistance dogs are warmly welcomed. Whether you're a long-time follower of contemporary art or simply curious to explore, esea contemporary is well worth a visit — and with free admission, there's every reason to drop in.
