Platt Fields Park in Manchester
Platt Fields Park is one of Manchester's most well-equipped green spaces, sitting on Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield and covering a wide stretch of open land that has been welcoming visitors since it was formally opened in 1910. It's a park that genuinely has something for everyone — whether you're after a gentle walk around the lake, an afternoon of sport, a session at the skatepark or a visit to one of the most fascinating costume collections in the country.
The lake and outdoor space
The park's lake is one of its most attractive features, providing a peaceful focal point around which to walk, sit and watch the world go by. The boathouse alongside it adds to the character of this corner of the park, and the surrounding open green space makes Platt Fields a popular spot for picnics and relaxed afternoons out. The park also serves as one of Manchester's major outdoor events venues, with three dedicated show fields capable of hosting everything from large-scale national events to smaller community gatherings.
Skatepark and BMX track
Platt Fields has a well-established skatepark and a dedicated BMX track, making it a genuine destination for riders and skaters across the city. The Bikehub is on site too, and the park has strong links with the local cycling community. For more information on the BMX facilities, visit www.manchesterbmx.co.uk.
Tennis courts
The park has tennis courts available to book, with free use offered between 6am and 10am and again between 1pm and 2pm Monday to Friday. At other times, courts can be booked at off-peak and peak rates. Courts can be reserved through the LTA's ClubSpark system at clubspark.lta.org.uk.
Play area
There is a children's adventure play area within the park, suitable for ages 12 and under, making Platt Fields a solid choice for a family outing. Plenty of open green space nearby means there's room to run around long after the play session is done.
Market garden
The market garden is a quieter and greener corner of the park, adding a community growing dimension to what is already a diverse and engaging site. It's a lovely area to explore and reflects the park's broader connection to the local neighbourhoods around it.
Platt Hall — Manchester's Costume Gallery
Sitting within the park grounds, the elegant Georgian mansion of Platt Hall is home to one of the most significant dress collections in the country. Originally established in 1947 as the Gallery of English Costume, the collection now comprises over 25,000 garments and accessories spanning centuries of fashion history, from everyday Victorian clothing to couture pieces by the likes of Balenciaga, Dior and Alexander McQueen. Entry is free, and the building itself — a beautiful 18th-century country house — is worth seeing in its own right. For more information visit www.platthall.org.
