Philips Park in Manchester
Philips Park is one of Manchester’s oldest and most historic public parks, officially opened in 1846. It was created as one of the UK’s first municipal parks, purchased “for the people, by the people”, and continues to be a well-used and valued green space today.
Gardens and green space
The park is home to a number of beautifully maintained areas, including the Peace Gardens and Tulip Valley Gardens, which provide colour and interest throughout the year. A community orchard adds to the park’s charm, offering a more natural and community-focused space within the wider parkland.
Family-friendly facilities
Philips Park is well suited to families, with a dedicated children’s play area and plenty of open space for games and picnics. The multi-use ball court and bowling green also provide opportunities for both casual play and more organised activities.
Riverside setting and wildlife
The River Medlock runs through the park, creating a peaceful setting and supporting a range of wildlife habitats. It’s a great place for a relaxed walk, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature close to the city centre.
Accessibility and location
Located in East Manchester next to the Etihad Stadium, Philips Park is easy to reach by public transport from the city centre. The park is accessible for disabled visitors, with pathways designed to make exploring as easy as possible for everyone.
Heritage and recognition
With its long history and high standards of maintenance, Philips Park has been recognised with Green Flag status, reflecting its quality as a welcoming and well-managed public space.
