Marie Louise Gardens in West Didsbury

Marie Louise Gardens is a 4.75 acre oasis of peace and seclusion in one of Manchester’s most densely populated suburbs. Often described as a hidden gem, it is tucked away just off Palatine Road and offers a calm, leafy space away from the bustle of the city.

History

The gardens were given to the citizens of Manchester in 1903 by Josephine Silkenstadt in memory of her daughter, Marie Louise, who died young. The park has been enjoyed by the local community for well over a century and remains an important part of the area’s character and heritage.

A community-loved green space

The Friends of Marie Louise Gardens was formed in 2008 following a successful campaign by local residents to protect the gardens. Since then, volunteers have helped support improvements including restored paths, renovated walls, benches, bins and the reopening of entrances.

Things to do

Marie Louise Gardens is ideal for a gentle walk, a quiet sit among the trees or exploring one of South Manchester’s lesser-known green spaces. There is also a Tree Trail to help visitors discover more about the gardens’ trees and landscape.

Volunteering

The Friends group regularly runs tidy-up sessions to help maintain the gardens. New volunteers are welcome and can do as much or as little as they like.
