Manchester Library of Things — known as MCRLOT — is a community-run social enterprise based at Levenshulme Old Library. It works just like a regular library, but instead of books, you borrow things: power tools, gardening equipment, cleaning appliances, camping gear, party supplies and much more. Items are sourced second-hand where possible, with many donated by local people and organisations.
Membership is open to everyone, with an annual fee that allows unlimited free borrowing throughout the year. For those who prefer not to commit, a pay-as-you-go option is also available. Discounted membership rates are offered to students and those on a low income, helping to keep the library as accessible as possible to the whole community.
MCRLOT is entirely volunteer-led and run as a not-for-profit, with the aim of reducing waste, cutting costs and encouraging a shift away from unnecessary ownership. By sharing high-quality items across the community, it helps keep useful equipment out of landfill and makes things affordable that might otherwise be out of reach.
