Manchester Cathedral has been at the centre of the city's life for nearly 600 years. Its origins date to 1421, when Henry V signed a royal charter granting permission for a collegiate church to be built on this site. In 1847 it became a cathedral when the Diocese of Manchester was created. Today it stands as one of the finest examples of medieval church architecture in the north of England, featuring beautiful stained glass windows, intricate 16th-century wooden carvings beneath the Quire stalls, a Saxon angel stone carving, gargoyles, musical angel carvings and Anthony Hollaway's striking Fire Window — a glass installation commemorating those who rebuilt the cathedral after wartime bombing in 1941.
The cathedral is a living, active place of worship with a daily cycle of prayer and services open to all, regardless of faith background. A dedicated team of volunteers is on hand throughout visiting hours to answer questions and help visitors make the most of their time. Free informal guided tours covering the history, art, architecture and Christian beliefs of the cathedral are generally available Monday to Saturday between 10am and 4pm, subject to volunteer availability. For groups seeking a guaranteed guide, private tours can be booked in advance by emailing the cathedral office at least one week ahead.
The Cathedral Visitor Centre, opened in 2002, sits alongside the main building and houses a dedicated exhibition space, a scheduled ancient monument in the form of the medieval Hanging Bridge dating from 1421, St Denys' Bookshop, a café and community meeting spaces available for hire. Educational resources are also available for school groups, with materials supporting the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Only guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted inside the cathedral.
