Cathedral Gardens is a beautifully designed public open space in Manchester city centre, situated in the medieval quarter between Manchester Cathedral, the National Football Museum, Chetham's School of Music and the Corn Exchange. Created as part of the city's regeneration following the 1996 IRA bombing, the gardens were developed through an international architectural competition and opened to the public as a new green heart for this historic corner of the city.
The space is built with natural stone and granite paving, surrounding open lawn areas and mature trees that provide a welcome green oasis amid the busy city centre. A water feature runs along the western edge, adding a calming focal point to the landscape. The gardens are fully wheelchair accessible throughout and serve as a natural meeting point connecting some of Manchester's most significant cultural and heritage destinations on foot.
Cathedral Gardens hosts a range of popular events throughout the year, including the Manchester Jazz Festival, the Manchester Food and Drink Festival and the Ice Village as part of the Christmas Markets, making it a lively and well-loved gathering point across the seasons as well as a quiet retreat on ordinary days.
